The People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has for the first time publicly shown a coordinated aerial formation involving its wingless stealth attack drone GJ‑11 Xuanlong, its fifth-generation stealth fighter jet J‑20 Weilong and the electronic-warfare variant J‑16D in a newly released microfilm, signalling significant maturation in China’s manned–unmanned teaming (MUM-T) capabilities. The footage, published to mark the PLAAF’s 76th anniversary, reveals a trio operating in concert to exploit stealth, electronic warfare and unmanned attrition in synergy.
According to the original report by the Chinese media outlet Global Times, the microfilm titled “Far-Reaching Dreams” documents the GJ-11 taking off from its hangar and joining formation with the J-20 and J-16D in flight. Military analyst Song Zhongping described the configuration as “a perfect combination”, where the J-16D suppresses hostile sensors, the J-20 breaches enemy defences and the GJ-11 acts as an extension of manned assets, venturing deeper into high-risk airspace.
This first-public unveiling of the PLAAF’s MUM-T formation is significant from multiple angles. It underscores Beijing’s accelerating push to integrate unmanned platforms into its combat force structure, moving beyond drones in isolation to orchestrated, mixed formations with high-end manned fighters. It also signals an intensification of China’s aerial competition in the Asia-Pacific region. With the Indo-Pacific experiencing growing demand for advanced airborne systems and networked operations, China’s demonstration may spur regional operators to expedite their own MUM-T developments.
In the Asia-Pacific strategic theatre, the capability to pair stealth manned jets with autonomous or remotely piloted aircraft and electronic-warfare escorts holds particular weight. With maritime contested zones, denied-area environments and long-range strike postures becoming more common, the ability to suppress sensors, penetrate air defences and project force via unmanned platforms offers a potent multiplier. Analysts note that for regional air forces, the implications are clear: the threshold for access to contested airspace is rising, and peer competitors must anticipate not just stealth fighters but accompanying unmanned ‘wingmen’ and electronic-warfare enablers.
China’s demonstration comes at a time when many Asia-Pacific air forces are upgrading fleets, investing in next-gen fighters and unmanned systems, and seeking deeper integration of sensors, networks and effectors. While the GJ-11 was first unveiled at the 2019 National Day military parade, this is the first time it has been shown together with the J-20 and J-16D in formation — a visual cue of moving from demonstrator to operational concept.
For the international defence and aerospace industry, this development offers several take-aways. First, maturity in MUM-T suggests rising demand in regional markets for unmanned "loyal wingman" concepts, stealthy unmanned attack platforms and electronic-warfare suites. Second, it underscores the growing importance of networked operations in Asia-Pacific defence procurement — manufacturers and system integrators need to focus on interoperability, seam-less data links and integration of unmanned assets with manned platforms. Third, it may prompt allied air forces and industrial bases to expand partnerships or accelerate indigenous developments in drone-fighter teaming — for example, existing programmes in Australia, Japan, India or South Korea may see renewed impetus.
In conclusion, the PLAAF’s public showcase of its GJ-11, J-20 and J-16D working in concert is not just a photo-op but a signal of operational intent. As regional air-power dynamics evolve, this step by China may constitute a paradigm shift in how air combat is conceptualised in the Asia-Pacific, with unmanned systems increasingly operating as integral components of manned platforms rather than as stand-alone assets. Defence and aerospace stakeholders would do well to watch how this capability matures and influences procurement, force structure and allied interoperability in the coming years.
