China has taken a clear step forward in the contest for aerial supremacy with the recent unveiling and rapid development of its next-generation combat aircraft programme. Images circulating earlier this week revealed what analysts believe to be the second prototype of the Chengdu J‑36 (unofficial designation), signalling an accelerated timeline for China’s ambition to challenge Western air power. According to a recent report, the updated prototype features notable design refinements in just ten months following its first public appearance—a rapid pace of development for a high-end combat platform.
In the report, the aircraft displayed angular thrust-vectoring exhaust nozzles replacing the recessed design of its predecessor, suggesting enhanced manoeuvrability and stealth optimisation.
China’s efforts in sixth-generation combat aviation have been underway for several years. The notion of a “sixth-generation fighter” encompasses features such as tailless air-frames, full spectrum sensor fusion, manned/unmanned teaming, directed-energy weapons and hypersonic cruise capability. In late 2024 China revealed a tailless, large-profile aircraft at Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) facilities, which analysts labelled J-36, believed to be a heavy stealth multirole platform with dual engines (or even tri-engine) and large internal weapons bays. The recent images show that the J-36 (or a variant thereof) has progressed into a more mature prototype stage, with major design tweaks such as dorsal air intakes, diverterless supersonic inlets (DSI), and advanced exhaust geometry that mirror some features found on Western systems.
The Asia-Pacific region is witnessing a shifting aerial balance, and China’s rapid iteration of its sixth-generation platform signals Beijing’s intention to assert dominance beyond regional airspace. For nations across the first and second island chains—Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Australia—the arrival of a Chinese aircraft capable of long-range stealth strike, advanced sensor fusion and drone teaming presents a growing challenge to existing defence postures. Analysts have speculated that the J-36 could function not just as a conventional fighter, but as an “airborne cruiser” capable of coordinating unmanned systems, carrying large internal payloads and projecting strike power over extended ranges. Moreover, given China’s focus on achieving operational capability ahead of or concurrent with Western sixth-generation programmes, the regional deterrence calculus may be compelled to adapt rapidly. The emergence of this platform forces air forces in the region—and their US allies—to reconsider their assumptions on air superiority and power projection.
For the US aerospace and defence industry, and by extension allied supply-chains in the Asia-Pacific, China’s accelerated development underscores the urgency of their own next-generation efforts, such as the NGAD (Next Generation Air Dominance) programme. Some US officials have acknowledged that China may achieve initial operating capability ahead of US sixth-generation assets—a strategic concern for the Pentagon and its partners. For industry stakeholders, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity: on the one hand, legacy platforms and incremental upgrades may be rendered less relevant; on the other, a new wave of procurement and offset initiatives in the Asia-Pacific—driven by rising regional threat perceptions—could open new markets for sixth-gen derivatives, unmanned teaming, AI-enabled combat systems and sensor integration.
The public emergence of the J-36 prototype, with its significant design refinements and rapid development path, serves as a clear signal that China is intent on being a frontrunner in next-generation air combat. For the Asia-Pacific defence community, this represents a watershed moment in the timeline of air-power competition. As China marches ahead, industry and governments in the region must reassess their assumptions on timelines, capability gaps and procurement strategies in order to maintain a credible deterrent posture.
