Dr. Paul Phipps, Chief Medical Officer and Director of Research and Development at Comfort Motion Global (CMG), introduced the company’s Healthy Motion Seating technology at the Red Cabin Asia Summit, hosted by All Nippon Airways (ANA) in Tokyo on December 4, 2024. The summit was attended by aviation industry executives from Airbus, major airlines, seating suppliers, designers, and journalists.
Healthy Motion Seating is a patented technology designed to improve comfort and wellness for first- and business-class passengers on long-haul flights. It offers a significant advancement in passenger experience by making small, slow adjustments to the seating position, gently shifting the passenger from one comfortable position to another without causing disruption. This movement redistributes body weight, alleviating tissue fatigue and reducing blood vessel compression that can lead to discomfort, pain, and poor blood circulation in the legs.
A study conducted in 2023 by Cardiff Metropolitan University and Macquarie University demonstrated the psychological and physiological benefits of Healthy Motion Seating. Passengers seated in chairs with the technology reported improvements in mood, reduced discomfort and pain from prolonged sitting, and significantly better blood flow to the legs.
Dr. Phipps noted that the technology, which requires no additional hardware and does not add weight to the aircraft, is a software-only solution, making it an ideal fit for the airline industry’s sustainability goals, including the ambition to achieve zero net CO2 emissions by 2050. The technology has already been adopted by automakers Mercedes-Benz in 2018 and Bentley in 2022.
An executive from an unnamed award-winning global airline commented that “Healthy Motion Seating is a feature that hits all of our objectives.” Dr. Phipps highlighted that the technology aligns with the growing focus on passenger well-being in the airline industry, offering a solution that combines science, comfort, wellness, and sustainability.
