Croatia to Buy Used Rafale Fighter Jets from France

Our Bureau - : Jun 1, 2021 - : 11:52 am

Croatia will buy 12 used Rafale F3-R fighter jets from France for its air force, the country’s Prime Minister, Andrej Plenković, has said. The deal is worth about US$1.2 billion.

“The purchase of the multirole fighter aircraft will strengthen Croatia’s position as a member of NATO and a partner within the European Union,” said Plenković said in a statement. “For the first time, we will reach 2 percent of the GDP allocated to strengthening our defense capabilities.”

Apart from the aircraft, the deal will cover weapon systems, spare parts, logistics and training.  As per the plan agreed upn by the two countries, France will deliver the first six twin-engine aircraft in 2024, and the remaining six Rafales in 2025.  The delivered aircraft will include 10 single-seater and two twin-seater fighter jets.

The country had initially considered buying F-16 Block 70 aircraft from the United States, Swedish JAS-39 Gripen C/D fighter jets, and F-16C/D Block 30 aircraft from Israel. In 2018, the Defence Ministry announced that the country would buy used Israeli F-16s, but the government went back on its decision and re-launched the tender.

The Air Force plans to replace its outdated Soviet-designed Mikoyan MiG-21 fighters with the used Rafale jets that will be purchased.
