DHL Group is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) logistics and supply chain solutions in the Asia Pacific region with the launch of three EV Centres of Excellence (COEs) in 2024. The new centres, located in Shanghai, Singapore, and Indonesia, will support various aspects of the EV industry, including capital equipment logistics for new EV-related factories, inbound-to-manufacturing (I2M), finished vehicle handling, and aftermarket logistics.
“Over the next five years, Asia is expected to account for 63% of the new 115 million EVs sold worldwide. A robust and compliant logistics supply chain ecosystem is needed to support this growing demand, and our EV Centers of Excellence in Shanghai, Singapore, and Indonesia serve as hubs of competencies and resources for the growing EV industry across the Asia Pacific,” said Fathi Tlatli, Global Auto-Mobility Sector President, DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation.
The EV COEs are part of DHL’s global network of such centres, which spans ten countries, including Italy, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates. These centres function as hubs of expertise, offering modular and integrated logistics solutions throughout the EV supply chain. Audrey Gerard, Vice President of Auto-Mobility for Asia Pacific at DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation, highlighted the complexity of EV logistics, saying: “When people think of EVs, it is often associated with the finished vehicle itself. However, there is an entire complex ecosystem behind the EV value chain, which is crucial in orchestrating the process. That is our advantage as DHL Group, as we can offer customized solutions for every segment utilizing our expertise and our extensive global network.”
DHL plans to establish additional EV COEs in countries with an existing EV industry presence, such as India, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand. The company sees the New Energy sector as a key growth area under its Strategy 2030 and anticipates increasing demand for logistics solutions related to repurposing or recycling end-of-life EV parts and batteries. Tlatli noted: “This segment will require complex logistics support, which we are exploring in the region leveraging solutions implemented in Europe and the Middle East networks as well as a market-leading cross-border road freight network in the ASEAN region.”
The new EV COEs will provide tailored logistics services across different areas of the EV industry. For companies involved in EV battery mineral extraction and battery production, DHL manages logistics for capital equipment and battery material supplies, including electrolytes and processed minerals. In the manufacturing sector, the company offers I2M services, handling the transportation and storage of EV batteries and components, with control towers monitoring factors such as temperature, humidity, and geolocation to ensure safety and efficiency. DHL also supports assembly plants with in-plant logistics, covering material handling, storage, and kitting.
For finished EVs, DHL facilitates large-scale distribution through containerised solutions and air freight for prototypes and urgent shipments. In 2024, the company transported vehicle prototypes from China to Europe, managing export clearance and compliance with dangerous goods regulations. Additional post-delivery services, such as pre-delivery inspections and yard management, have been implemented in various markets.
In the EV aftermarket segment, DHL operates part distribution networks for manufacturers across Asia Pacific, including India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The company provides EV-specific solutions, such as shared storage facilities, to meet compliance requirements and ensure timely delivery of parts to dealerships.
