The Asia-Pacific region is currently witnessing an unprecedented resurgence in air travel demand, with passenger numbers projected to exceed pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2025. Amidst this regional boom, Cambodia has aggressively positioned itself as a competitive logistics and tourism hub with the operational launch of the Techo International Airport (KTI). Located some 20 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, the greenfield project represents a significant leap forward in infrastructure, replacing the ageing Phnom Penh International Airport with a facility designed from the ground up for the digital age.
The USD 1.5 billion development is a joint venture between the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC) and the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), operating under the banner of Cambodia Airport Investment Co. Ltd. (CAIC). With a Phase 1 capacity of 13 million passengers annually, KTI is not merely an expansion of capacity but a strategic modernisation. By integrating advanced processing capabilities, the airport aims to capture a larger share of the Southeast Asian transit market, directly competing with established hubs in Thailand and Vietnam for long-haul connectivity.
According to a statement released by aviation technology provider SITA on 25 November 2025, the airport’s operational backbone relies heavily on next-generation digital infrastructure. This deployment aligns with the findings of SITA’s Travelers’ Voice, Passenger IT Insights 2025 report, which highlights that nearly two-thirds of travellers now demand faster, automated airport processing. KTI has implemented a suite of these technologies, including self-service kiosks and biometric eGates, marking the first time such a fully digital passenger experience has been available in the Kingdom.
The technological overhaul extends significantly ‘below the wing’. operational efficiency is bolstered by the SITA Bag Manager, a system designed to track baggage in real-time. For an industry plagued by mishandling costs, this level of visibility is crucial. Furthermore, the airport has adopted a cloud-based Airport Management System. This platform aggregates data to provide airport duty managers with actionable insights, allowing for predictive rather than reactive responses to potential disruptions—a critical capability for a hub targeting 24/7 international operations.
Sumesh Patel, President, Asia Pacific at SITA, emphasised the necessity of this tech-forward approach in a high-growth region. “Southeast Asia’s aviation market is growing at record pace, but that growth brings complexity,” Patel observed. “Techo International Airport shows how technology can turn that challenge into opportunity. By adopting scalable, data-driven systems from day one, CAIC has created an airport that can grow sustainably.”
The facility’s connectivity infrastructure is equally robust. Currently, 29 airlines operate through the Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) platform, which standardises check-in and boarding procedures across different carriers. This integration is vital for the airport's ambitious expansion plans; Phase 2 and Phase 3 aim to increase capacity to 30 million and 50 million passengers respectively, cementing KTI’s status as a formidable new player in the Asia-Pacific aerospace landscape.
