Tokyo, Japan – DSEI Japan 2025 has opened with a marked expansion in both scale and international participation, underlining the growing strategic and industrial importance of Japan within the Indo-Pacific defence landscape.
This year’s event features 471 exhibitors, a sharp increase from 292 in the previous edition held in 2023. The number of participating countries has also risen to 33, up from 24, as global defence companies seek closer engagement with Japan’s self-defence and security sector, as well as opportunities for regional collaboration.
The domestic industry presence has nearly doubled, with 169 Japanese exhibitors represented in 2025, compared to 86 in 2023. The rise reflects both an expanding local defence industrial base and increased interest from civilian technology companies entering the dual-use and security sectors.
Organisers expect the event to draw over 14,000 visitors, compared to 8,432 in 2023. To accommodate the growth, the total venue area has been expanded to 26,500 square metres, effectively doubling the footprint of the previous edition. This increase allows for more extensive exhibition displays, live demonstrations, and broader networking and conference opportunities.
DSEI Japan remains the country’s only fully integrated defence and security event aligned with the international format of the original DSEI held in London. It serves as a key forum for engagement between the Japanese Ministry of Defence, the Japan Self-Defense Forces, international industry players, and academic institutions.
The expanded participation reflects a broader trend of heightened defence interest in the Indo-Pacific. Japan’s own evolving defence posture—including increased spending, modernisation efforts, and expanded cooperation with allies such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia—has drawn international attention.
While Japan maintains a constitutionally constrained approach to defence, the government’s 2022 National Security Strategy and subsequent policy developments have opened the door to deeper industrial and technological collaboration. This includes areas such as cybersecurity, unmanned systems, command and control infrastructure, and space-based assets.
The representation of 33 countries in 2025 (up from 24) is based on the headquarters location of each exhibitor, not subsidiary status. For example, Motorola Japan is listed as a Japanese company, while Fujitsu UK is counted under the United Kingdom, reflecting the show’s effort to maintain consistency in national representation.
This nuanced approach offers a more accurate picture of which national industries are prioritising engagement with Japan. It also highlights increasing involvement from companies based in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia, many of which are seeking new partnerships or market opportunities in the region.
Although official speaker sessions and detailed technology showcases are still unfolding, early indicators suggest strong emphasis on:
The growth in these areas mirrors Japan’s own procurement priorities and investment focus. Notably, several Japanese defence-related firms with origins in commercial sectors—such as information technology and robotics—have increased their footprint at DSEI Japan.
DSEI Japan’s continued expansion points to its rising relevance not only as a domestic platform but also as a regional event of international stature. With geopolitical tensions in East Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific continuing to shape defence priorities, Japan’s position as a strategic hub for defence innovation and cooperation is likely to remain in the spotlight.
