EDGE and Indra Bolster Naval Capabilities with Smart Weapons Venture

The landscape of maritime security is undergoing a rapid transformation as asymmetric surface threats necessitate more agile response mechanisms. In a significant move to address these challenges, Emirati defence powerhouse EDGE Group and Spain’s Indra Group formalised a joint venture earlier this month. The partnership is dedicated to the large-scale manufacture of smart maritime weapons and loitering munitions, primarily intended for deployment on naval vessels to counter high-speed, low-cost surface threats.

Indra is expected to invest between €15 million and €20 million (US$16.4 million to US$21.9 million) in a new drone production facility in León, Spain. This facility will serve as the industrial hub for the venture, which is backed by a projected multi-year order pipeline estimated at approximately €2 billion (US$2.19 billion).

The development was reported by international industry monitors. Sources highlight that the agreement was signed in Madrid by Hamad Al Marar, Managing Director and CEO of EDGE Group, and José Vicente de Los Mozos, CEO of Indra. This builds upon their existing joint venture, PULSE, which focused on integrated radar and electronic warfare.

Countering asymmetric maritime threats

The venture focuses on loitering munitions, providing real-time reconnaissance and precision strike capabilities against swarms of small boats and uncrewed surface vessels (USVs). By integrating these into UAE and European platforms, the partners provide a layered defence that is both lethal and economically sustainable.

Expansion into Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific region is a priority market, as its archipelagic geography mirrors the environments where loitering munitions excel. The alliance is well-positioned to offer regional navies a proven alternative to traditional systems, combining Middle Eastern rapid prototyping with European industrial standards.
