Egypt’s first FREMM Bergamini frigate (Al-Galala) has arrived at Alexandria’s naval base.
According to a statement by the Egyptian military spokesman, Brigadier General Tamer Al-Rifai, “The frigate (Al-Galala) is one of two (Frim) frigates that were contracted between Egypt and Italy, which reflects the vision of the political leadership and its strong support to advance the partnership and cooperation relations between the two friendly countries in many Domains.”
The frigate (Galala) is one of two Egypt purchased from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. The crew was trained as part of a program that was carried out in both Italy and Egypt.
The FFG 1002 (Al-Galala) has a full load displacement of about 6,500 tons, an overall length of about 144 meters, and can reach a top speed of 27 knots (50 km/h; 31 mph) with a maximum cruising range of 6,800 nmi (12,600 km; 7,800 mi) at 15 knots (28 km/h; 17 mph). The warship is powered by combined diesel-electric and gas (CODLAG) propulsion system, including one 32 MW gas turbine General Electric/Avio LM2500+G4, two 2.5 MW electric motors Jeumont Electric and four diesel generators.
The FREMM frigate is part of the Egyptian MoD’s procurement programme in the General Purpose (GP) configuration for Anti-surface warfare (ASuW) oriented operations. The frigate maintains a weapon and sensors package, including one Leonardo 127/64 with an automated magazine that can fire both conventional and Vulcano long-range guided ammunition families.
The ship also has a Leonardo OTO Melara 76/62 mm Davide/Strales CIWS gun to fire the DART guided ammunition for countering both anti-ship missiles and asymmetric threats. The frigate also is equipped with two triple Leonardo (WASS) B-515/3 launcher for MU 90 torpedoes, two Leonardo Oto Melara/Oerlikon KBA 25/80 mm remote weapon systems, eight MBDA Teseo/Otomat Mk-2/A anti-ship and land-attack missiles, and two SITEP MASS CS-424 acoustic guns.
The ship is also armed with 16-cell MBDA SYLVER, SAAM-ESD (Surface Anti-Air Missile – Extended Self-Defence) with A50 VLS (Vertical Launching System) for 16 MBDA Aster 15 and 30 missiles, and one Leonardo Otobreda 127/64 Vulcano naval gun.
“The new frigate is among the most advanced units in service, as it represents a deterrent force to maintain peace, provide freedom of navigation, and support the security of the Suez Canal in light of the hostilities and challenges in the region,” said Lieutenant-General Ahmed Khaled, Commander of the Egyptian Navy.
