Electric Alice is Ready and Waiting

: Jun 20, 2019 - : 5:23 am

Israeli start-up Eviation showed off its all-electric airliner Alice at the Paris Air Show and said a US carrier has already placed an order. Company CEO Omer Bar-Yohay said Alice is the first of its kind in the world. "The first all-electric commuter aircraft in the world is out here ready and waiting," he said. Eviation displayed a prototype of the nine-seat plane at the event. It's designed to fly as fast as 650 mph and has a cruise speed of 276 mph. The goal, Eviation said, is not to replace long-haul commercial air travel, but capture a growing market of short-distance flyers. The plane has a list price of about US$4 million each, which is far cheaper than conventional jet-powered airliners, and roughly 900 kilowatts of power split by three MagniX engines. The company said Cape Air, one of the largest independent U.S. regional carriers, has already placed an order. After test flights this year, the plane is expected to receive certification by 2021 and will be delivered to the customer by 2022. Meanwhile, the Magnaghi Group - Ma Group, the Italian multinational market leader in the design and production of complete landing gear systems, has signed an important memorandum of understanding with Eviation. Alice will be able to fly at 220 knots with a range of 650 miles on a single battery charge with the two pilots. Eviation defines Alice as the "first fully electric and fully operational regional commuter". MA Group is developing the landing gear system for the ALICE project consisting of two electrically driven main landing gears, a tail landing gear as well as wheels and brakes, which will use state-of-art electrical technology, developed by Magnaghi. "We are proud to be part of this project that could change the course of global air transport," says MA Group Senior Vice President, Giorgio Iannotti. "This confirms our ability to offer highly advanced and technological products working closely with our customers and partners. For this program MA Group will implement electrical brakes technologies as advanced materials applications to minimize overall maintenance activities.
