Brazilian aerospace powerhouse Embraer is intensifying its efforts to capture a significant share of the Malaysian narrow-body market, positioning its E2 family of jets as the primary solution for the country’s evolving regional aviation landscape. As domestic carriers navigate the complexities of slot constraints at major hubs and the need for enhanced point-to-point connectivity, the manufacturer has identified Malaysia as a critical growth engine within the broader Asia Pacific region.
The strategic push comes at a time when Malaysian aviation is undergoing a structural shift, particularly with the redevelopment of Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang. Embraer anticipates that the E195-E2, which boasts a 62 per cent lower noise footprint compared to previous-generation aircraft, will be the ideal fit for city-centre operations where stringent noise regulations often limit larger narrow-body activity.
According to reporting by the New Straits Times and Bernama, Embraer is currently in high-level discussions with several Malaysian operators. These talks focus on how the E2’s right-sized capacity—ranging from 70 to 150 seats—can bridge the gap between low-demand regional routes and high-density trunk lines. The manufacturer has forecasted a demand for 150 new aircraft in the sub-150-seat category in Malaysia over the next two decades to support the opening of over 100 new potential routes.
The Asia Pacific region is expected to account for nearly 39 per cent of global air traffic by 2044, and Embraer is leveraging this growth by strengthening its local support infrastructure. To bolster its presence, the company has established a new E2 flight simulator in the region to facilitate pilot training and "Entry into Service" processes. This is part of a wider effort to support the nearly 20 operators currently flying approximately 200 E-Jets across Asia, including markets in China, Japan, Australia, and Singapore.
While the Malaysian market shows immense promise, it has not been without challenges. SKS Airways, which originally committed to leasing ten E195-E2 jets in a deal valued at over US$840 million (approximately RM3.7 billion at the time of signing), recently faced hurdles regarding slot allocations at Subang Airport. Despite such setbacks for individual carriers, the Brazilian OEM remains optimistic about the long-term viability of the Malaysian aerospace hub, citing the government’s Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030 as a key driver for ecosystem development.
Embraer is also pitching the E2 family as a cornerstone of the industry’s transition to net-zero emissions. The aircraft is currently certified to fly with 50 per cent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and has successfully demonstrated 100 per cent SAF compatibility in flight testing. This alignment with global environmental mandates is seen as a vital selling point for Asia Pacific airlines facing increasing pressure to de-carbonise.
Beyond commercial aviation, Embraer’s spinoff, Eve Air Mobility, is slated to introduce zero-emission electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft by 2026. This portfolio diversification, combined with a record backlog that reached US$29.7 billion in mid-2025, underscores the company's intent to dominate the regional skies. As Malaysia seeks to reposition itself as Southeast Asia's leading aerospace nation, the partnership between local stakeholders and Brazilian engineering appears set to play a defining role in the decade ahead.
