The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has awarded European defence leader Exail a major contract for the supply of several hundred K-Ster mine neutralisation vehicles. Valued at approximately €40 million (US$43.7 million), the order represents a significant step in the comprehensive modernisation of mine countermeasure (MCM) capabilities across European and Alliance navies.
This latest procurement, announced on 6 January 2026, is executed under a strategic framework agreement established in 2024. The arrangement provides a streamlined acquisition pathway, allowing NATO member states to rapidly bolster their underwater arsenals with proven autonomous technology. The K-Ster vehicles, known for their operational reliability in high-stakes environments, will be manufactured at Exail's specialised production facility in Ostend, Belgium.
The details of this agreement were first reported by Exail and subsequent industry briefings through the NSPA. According to these sources, the Ostend site, which reached full operational capacity in 2022, is now scaled to meet the surge in demand for next-generation MCM systems. Jérôme Bendell, CEO of Exail’s Maritime Business line, noted that the order confirms the central role of unmanned systems in protecting critical maritime infrastructure and securing sea lines of communication.
The K-Ster system is a lightweight, expendable remotely operated vehicle (ROV) designed to neutralise sea mines while keeping personnel and high-value vessels at a safe distance. Equipped with a tiltable shaped charge and high-resolution sensors, the vehicle can target various mine types, including those on the seabed or moored in the water column. This transition to "stand-off" mine warfare is a key priority for NATO as it seeks to maintain control of the underwater domain amidst rising geopolitical tensions.
Beyond the immediate scope of the NSPA contract, the shift toward autonomous MCM solutions is gaining substantial traction in the Asia-Pacific region. As territorial disputes and the protection of vital trade routes like the Malacca Strait become increasingly urgent, regional navies are looking toward the European model of unmanned mine warfare. Exail has already made significant inroads in this market, recently securing contracts to equip the Indonesian Navy with a full suite of UMIS autonomous systems and providing next-generation robotic solutions to the Republic of Singapore Navy.
For Asia-Pacific operators, the K-Ster offers a scalable solution to the "grey-zone" threats that often target subsea energy corridors and communication cables. The ability to deploy these systems from uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) or ships of opportunity provides a flexible, cost-effective alternative to traditional, dedicated minehunters. This modularity is particularly attractive to Southeast Asian nations currently undergoing naval modernisation to counter sophisticated underwater threats.
The current order reinforces a growing global backlog for Exail, which now exceeds 1,000 autonomous drones. By maintaining full sovereign control over the critical building blocks of these systems—from inertial navigation to acoustic positioning—Exail has positioned itself as a primary partner for both NATO and its allies in the Indo-Pacific. As maritime security priorities converge across the two theatres, the standardisation of such autonomous platforms is expected to enhance interoperability during joint exercises and multinational patrols.
