Exclusive Interaction: Maj Gen (retd) Yoav Har-Even, President & CEO, Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Ltd.

: May 15, 2019 - : 11:57 pm

Israeli defence firm, Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Ltd., has been particularly successful in SE Asia with its range of maritime offerings and sees the region as a key future market. For Asian navies, Rafael offers high-end technology that can be customised and tailor-made to their often disparate platforms, thereby providing them with a substantial capability upgrade.

A sign of the importance attached by Rafael to the region and the IMDEX Asia defence exhibition is the presence of its President & CEO, Maj Gen (retd) Yoav Har-Even, at the show.

Daily News spoke to Maj Gen Har-Even on the sidelines of IMDEX Asia, where he tells Atul Chandra that the current pace of technological evolution for military platforms and products brings with it a lot of opportunities.

“You must have the changes in the doctrines for this in the way we think and the way we develop weapon systems,” says Maj Gen Har-Even. “Everybody speaks now of the 4th industrial revolution, Big Data, software etc. Technology allows us today to complete an operational mission in a completely different way as we can use a variety of weapons and sensors to achieve the desired objective, with the ability to see first, know and understand the objective and then use the best tools to achieve the objective.” Understanding the true potential of modern military technology will challenge military planners in deciding how they should be employed for maximum effect, he adds.

Rafael invests heavily in pure Research & Development (R&D), said Maj Gen Har-Even. “We are already working on very futuristic technology and much of our advanced technology is already available for export. We have to be at the forefront of defence technology all the time and are constantly reallocating our internal resources to work on different technologies and encourage innovation,” he says.

Maj Gen Har-Even was all praise for the organisation of IMDEX Asia. The event, he says, allows the company to showcase its maritime products to navies in the region.
