A Show Where Fifth-gen Giants Converge

Our Bureau - : Feb 4, 2026 - : 11:12 pm

The ongoing show provides a high-visibility stage for the world’s leading fifth-generation combat aircraft. The biennial event is dominated by the presence of Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II and the increasing regional footprint of China’s advanced fighter programmes. The event marks a pivotal moment for Asia-Pacific air power, serving as both a commercial marketplace and a diplomatic arena where stealth capabilities are the primary currency.

The show is defined by the high-profile debut of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F-35A Lightning II in the flying display, a move that signals Australia’s maturing fifth-generation fleet and its commitment to regional security. While the F-35 remains the cornerstone of Western-aligned air forces in the region, the broader presence of Chinese aviation assets, including the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) Bayi aerobatic team and the industrial might of AVIC, highlights the intensifying competition. The J-35, China’s newest stealth contender, remains a subject of intense scrutiny amongst delegates as it nears operational milestones that could challenge the F-35’s market dominance in non-aligned nations.

The narrative at Changi has shifted from theoretical stealth to operational reality, with the F-35 and J-35 now representing the competing poles of future aerial warfare.

Strategic Significance

For the host nation, the airshow is a significant one as it is taking place at a time when the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) is accelerating its own transition to fifth-generation technology. In September 2025, Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing reaffirmed the commitment to a total fleet of 20 F-35 aircraft, comprising both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ variants. The first of these jets is on track for delivery by the end of 2026. This acquisition is a strategic move to maintain a qualitative edge in an increasingly congested airspace. The F-35B, specifically, offers the RSAF the ability to operate from short runways and austere bases, a critical requirement for the land-scarce island nation.

Across the aisle, the AVIC Shenyang J-35 continues to draw interest as a twin-engine alternative to the F-35. Analysts note that while the F-35 enjoys a multi-year head start in operational experience and a massive global supply chain, the J-35 benefits from more recent design iterations and a different engine philosophy. The presence of Chinese military hardware at the show is not merely an exhibit but a statement of intent. The Bayi aerobatic team’s performance underscores the PLAAF’s professionalisation and the technological sophistication that now supports its newest airframes.

Market Sentiment

The sentiment on the ground at Changi suggests that the “battle” of the fifth-gen fighters is as much about industrial capability as it is about kinetic performance. Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director of Experia, the event organiser, noted that the 2026 line-up reflects strong international support and a diverse mix of military technology.

From a procurement perspective, the F-35 remains a massive investment. Singapore’s initial planned purchase of four F-35B jets, with an option for eight more, was estimated at approximately US$2.75 billion. Minister Chan Chun Sing, during a visit to the Lockheed Martin facility in Texas, described the programme as a long-term partnership, stating, “This is not just a milestone, but one step in a long journey that we will take together with Lockheed Martin.” This sentiment is echoed by regional allies who see the F-35 not just as a fighter, but as a networked sensor node essential for modern integrated defence.
