Fincantieri Unveils K180 Ghost Concept, Eyes Middle East

After holding initial discussions with prospective customers in the Middle East as well as the Italian Navy, shipbuilder Fincantieri on Tuesday officially presented the   K180 Ghost concept at the ongoing DIMDEX.

The ‘Ghost’ in the vessel’s name stands for geometry, hyper-velocity, open architecture, Stealth and tactical platform, Domenico Roco, Sales Manager at Naviris, said. “Fincantieri is ready to invest in the project by building the prototype to show prospective customers, he added.

Part of the company’s broader portfolio of stealth-oriented patrol and attack vessels designed for high-intensity littoral environments, the fully unmanned K180 Ghost will be fitted with an integrated self defence system and will have to capability to operate drones and loitering munitions. “The main characteristic of K180 Ghost is low detectability. The cross-section signature is almost zero. It is fast and lethal,” said Roco.

“We are still talking about concept because we want to better understand different navy needs, the needs of the special forces,” added Roco.  “For the prototype and the construction of the mould, it will take 18 months. The main constraint is not the platform itself, but  the lead time of the combat system. As an Italian company, we usually integrate Leonardo or Elettronica combat systems, but we are open to customizing our vessels with different combat systems based on the needs of our customers. The main driver is not the brand of the combat system but the adaptation of the platform to different systems.”

The company considers the Middle East as the primary make for the platform. “We think it would be an ideal fit for the region. We have already had interactions on the concept with Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. We are talking about a special product. We want to support our customers in managing life cycle support; it is made of carbon composite materials and need special skills for repair.”

The company is also discussing the concept with the Italian Navy, he said. “In the past, there was an idea about a concept similar to this one, but it was dropped. Now,  talks are in progress. We are ready to start work as soon as we get an order, from any navy.”

One of the largest shipbuilders in the world, Fincantieri has built 7,000 ships so far. It is also engaged in the development of solutions for the underwater domain.
