The first AH-64E Apache attack reconnaissance helicopter for the Australian Army has reached the final assembly stage at Boeing’s production facility in Mesa, Arizona.
Designated AT001, the aircraft is undergoing structural, electrical wiring, major sub-assembly, and mechanical installation before proceeding to flight testing, expected to begin in mid-2025. Boeing’s Mesa facility has produced more than 2,800 Apache helicopters to date.
“The induction of the Australian Army’s first E-model Apache into final assembly marks the beginning of a new era for Australia’s defence and industrial capabilities,” said Christina Upah, vice president of Boeing Attack Helicopter Programs. She added that Boeing is working with Australia to build and sustain the Apache fleet, with the first deliveries scheduled for later this year.
Australian industry is contributing to the Apache programme, with companies supplying various components. Cablex is providing wire harnesses and electrical panels, Axiom Precision Manufacturing is producing avionics bay shelving and machined assemblies, Ferra is supplying vertical spar boxes, and Mincham is manufacturing composites and fairings.
The Australian Army is set to receive the first four AH-64E Apaches in late 2025 as part of its order for 29 aircraft, which will be based in Townsville, North Queensland. Boeing Defence Australia will support the fleet under an initial seven-year contract, which includes maintenance, engineering, training, and logistics. More than 230 new roles will be created in Queensland to support these operations.
