French President Emmanuel Macron stated that France is advancing warplane and submarine cooperation with Indonesia during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday (Nov. 17).
His statement underlined the contract for 42 French-made Rafale F4 jet fighters that Indonesia signed in February this year. Recently, the Indonesian government has approved the funding for the first and second batches of Rafale delivery amounted to about 18 aircraft in total with the funding for the final batch expected to be approved in the next few months.
The Indonesian Ministry of Defense (Kementerian Pertahanan/Kemhan) has also expressed its intention to acquire up to six submarines for the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL). It has been indicated that Kemhan has approved the acquisition of three French-made Scorpene submarines which will be built in Indonesia’s state-owned PT PAL facility under the supervision of the French Naval Group.
The defense cooperation between France and Indonesia has significantly grown in the past few years. Aside from warplanes and submarines, French defense companies have also been active in collaborating with their Indonesian state-owned counterparts for the acquisition, maintenance, and up to joint production of large-caliber ammunition, ground-based radars, to air-to-ground missiles.
