France has signed a contract with Swedish defence company Saab for its Next Generation Light Anti-tank Weapon (NLAW), as European militaries continue to strengthen ground combat capabilities amid rising defence spending across the continent.
The agreement, signed with France's defence procurement agency, the Direction générale de l'Armement (DGA), covers NLAW weapons as well as indoor and outdoor training systems. Deliveries are scheduled between 2026 and 2030 and the contract includes options for additional purchases.
Saab did not disclose the value of the contract.
"NLAW will bring a new level of anti-tank capability that changes the dynamic on the battlefield for the French Army," said Görgen Johansson, head of Saab's Dynamics business area. He noted that Saab already supplies AT4 and Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon systems to the French armed forces.
NLAW is a shoulder-fired anti-tank weapon designed for use by individual soldiers against modern armoured vehicles. The system is currently used by countries including Sweden, the United Kingdom and Finland.
The order comes as European governments continue to increase defence budgets and replenish military inventories following lessons from the war in Ukraine. For Saab, the deal adds to growing demand for its land combat systems as European countries accelerate procurement of battlefield-proven equipment.
The company said NLAW's guidance system enables a single soldier to engage modern main battle tanks from behind cover, inside buildings or around corners without requiring complex setup procedures.
