General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has announced its decision to invest in two Dutch companies—Emergent Swarm Solutions and Saluqi Motors—following their participation in the inaugural Blue Magic Netherlands (BMN) innovation event held in November.
The BMN event, co-organised by GA-ASI, the Dutch Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Brainport Development, and the Brabant Development Agency (BOM), aimed to identify emerging technologies from within the Netherlands. The conference focused on fields such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, autonomy, advanced materials, sensors, manufacturing, and space technologies. Out of nearly 50 applicants, 16 companies were selected to present their proposals.
GA-ASI managing director Brad Lunn said the two selected companies stood out for the relevance and quality of their technologies. “The technologies presented by Emergent and Saluqi really stood out to us, and we're proud to be working with them,” he said. “I expect several other companies from the Blue Magic Netherlands event to emerge and we hope to make additional announcements in the near future.”
Emergent Swarm Solutions specialises in software for autonomous flight and decentralised swarming systems used across unmanned vehicle platforms. GA-ASI will work with Emergent to enhance autonomy capabilities in its current and future aircraft systems.
“It is a pleasure to partner with General Atomics to develop and deploy our autonomy and swarming capabilities on the current and next generation of unmanned aircraft,” said Lennart Bult, co-founder and managing director of Emergent Swarm Solutions. “Collaborating with the General Atomics team has been a fantastic experience, and we look forward to delivering advanced capabilities through this partnership.”
Saluqi Motors develops compact, high-performance motors with integrated electronics, designed to deliver increased power and torque in a reduced form factor. The partnership will involve adapting existing designs to meet aerospace environmental standards and the development of new products for specific use cases.
“We are deeply honored to be selected by GA-ASI from such a strong field of innovative companies,” said Matthijs de Haan, CEO of Saluqi Motors. “Our ultra-compact and high-performance motors are engineered to meet the demanding requirements of aerospace applications. This collaboration enables us to further validate our technology and develop new solutions for the defense and aerospace industries.”
GA-ASI has hosted a number of Blue Magic events since the first was held in Belgium in 2019. The company is currently delivering eight MQ-9A aircraft to the Royal Netherlands Air Force and says it plans to continue engaging with Dutch industry through future BMN events.
“GA-ASI is committed to continue working with the Dutch government and Dutch industry in supporting the growth of technology innovation in the Netherlands,” Lunn added.
