The General Dynamics Land Systems Desert Viper 8x8 armoured vehicle, which made its DIMDEX debut in 2024, is on display again at the show. The 8×8 light armoured vehicle, draws on the operational lineage of platforms such as the U.S. Army’s Stryker and is being showcased at DIMDEX as part of efforts to address modernisation requirements within the Qatar Armed Forces’ land forces.
Speaking to GBP Daily News, a company representative said the armoured vehicle represents the latest evolution of light armoured 8×8 platforms and has been developed with a strong focus on operations in desert environments. Unlike globally marketed armoured vehicles adapted for a wide range of climates, the Desert Viper has been specifically engineered to operate effectively in the harsh conditions typical of the Gulf region, including extreme heat, sand and extended mobility demand.
The engagement with Qatar has included demonstrations and evaluations both in the United States and in-country. An earlier variant of the vehicle was shown to Qatari personnel in the US, before being brought to Qatar in 2022 for intensive trials. Since then, the platform has continued to be used for demonstrations, further evaluations and familiarisation activities, including basic training on vehicle operation and weapons employment.
The Desert Viper 8x8 armoured vehicle is based on a high-capacity chassis rated for more than 32,000 kg. The Desert Viper’s high-performance driveline and suspension and all-wheel disc brakes are combined with a twin turbo Caterpillar engine, a seven-speed automatic transmission and a cooling system designed for continuous operation in the most extreme climates. It can exceed speeds of 110 kmph and offers a range in excess of 1,000 km. Trench crossing capability is greater than 2.2 m and its payload is 11,000 kg. The integrated propulsion unit can be removed and replaced in well under an hour, even in austere conditions.
