In a strategic move reinforcing local industrial participation in defence procurement, Malaysian firm Global Komited Sdn Bhd has signed a subcontract agreement with Thales Malaysia for deployment of GM400 radar systems at two strategic highlands: Bukit Lunchu and Bukit Peteri. The deal, concluded on 14 October 2025, was formalised by Datuk Ir. Mohd Nasser on behalf of Global Komited, and Mr. Florian Riou representing Thales Malaysia, with Tan Sri Syed Azman of the Weststar Group witnessing the ceremony.
This announcement arrives amid a broader expansion of Malaysia’s air surveillance architecture, in which Thales is already supplying additional Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400α) long-range radars to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF). In July 2025, Thales confirmed receipt of a Letter of Award to deliver two further GM400α systems, bringing Malaysia’s total GM400 radar count to four. That broader contract, as disclosed in Thales’ public communication, emphasises Malaysia’s push to deepen local defence industry capabilities via industrial cooperation programmes.
Global Komited is not a standalone player: it is a subsidiary under Weststar Defence Industries, which itself is part of the larger Weststar Group. Over time, the group has carved a niche in Malaysian defence contracting and logistics, making this subcontract a clear example of how foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are partnering with domestic firms in Asia Pacific. As Malaysia continues its military modernisation push, local firms such as Global Komited gain both capability and prestige through such partnerships.
The GM400 series, and especially the GM400α variant, represents a modern 3D active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar system. It is designed for mobility, ease of deployment, and high integration into a nation’s air command and control network. The radar can detect low-flying objects (including drones) and high-altitude aircraft alike, with a quoted instrumented range of up to 515 km. Because Malaysia was among the earliest users of the original GM400 model (dating back to 2009), the current expansion reflects both continuity and trust in the technology. Globally, over 270 units in the GM family have been sold across more than 20 countries, underlining the technology’s maturity.
