India’s state-owned airframer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is pushing ahead with its ambitious autonomous Combat Air Teaming System (CATS) programme. HAL announced in January, that the Combat Air Teaming System had achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting the engine ground run for a Full-Scale CATS – Warrior Demonstrator. “This demonstrates synergy between various R&D centres of HAL with Aircraft design and integration by ARDC, indigenous Mission Computer from SLRDC & indigenous power plant from AERDC,” a company spokesperson said. The CATS Warrior is powered by an upgraded version of HAL’s indigenously developed PTAE-7 engine, which is used in Lakshya target drones. The Full-Scale CATS – Warrior Demonstrator is being displayed at the ongoing airshow.
HAL is developing the Combat Air Teaming System with its own funds with the aim of developing a deep penetration strike asset with an internal weapons bay. An operational radius of 350 km is being sought, with the CATS Warrior controlled from the mothership. Original developmental timelines had sought for the prototype system to be ready by 2025-26. HAL is also undertaking the design and development of the HTFE-25, a 25kN thrust class turbofan engine, which can be used on Basic/ Advanced military trainers, on small business jets and also large UAV applications. The engine can be used on a five tonne weight class aircraft in single engine configuration and on aircraft of up to nine tonne weight class with twin-engine configuration. Two core engines have been produced so far and are undergoing development trials The airframer envisages that upcoming manned platforms in development such as the LCA Mk2 and Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA)will operate in conjunction with the unmanned CATS Warrior, a low observable wingman that serves as the focal point of the weapons system. CATS Warrior will also be equipped with MBDA’s ASRAAM in addition to other air-to-ground and air-to-air weapons. High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs are also planned to be integrated.
