In a landmark move for South Korea’s private space sector, Hanwha Aerospace has signed a full technology transfer agreement with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) for the KSLV-II, also known as Nuri, the country’s first domestically developed space launch vehicle.
This is the first time in South Korea’s history that the complete launch vehicle system technology, covering design, manufacturing, and launch operations, has been handed over to a private enterprise. The agreement formally establishes Hanwha Aerospace as a central player in the nation’s burgeoning space industry.
Developed over a 14-year period by KARI, with contributions from over 300 domestic companies, the KSLV-II marked a milestone in 2023 when South Korea became the seventh nation capable of launching a satellite using homegrown technology. Under the new arrangement, Hanwha will work closely with KARI on future launches to ensure a smooth and effective transfer of operational expertise.
The deal is part of Hanwha Aerospace’s broader strategy to develop a comprehensive space value chain, aligning with affiliates such as Hanwha Systems and Satrec Initiative to integrate launch services, satellite production, and space-based technologies.
“This technology transfer is a critical milestone for improving the nation’s space industry capabilities,” said Son Jae-il, President and CEO of Hanwha Aerospace. “It provides us with the foundation to enhance the KSLV-II’s technological capabilities and cost-effectiveness. Our goal is to build a robust and globally competitive commercial launch service, solidifying our position as a leader in the new space era.”
The agreement is expected to boost South Korea’s ambitions in the commercial space market and position Hanwha as a serious contender on the global launch services stage.
