South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has unveiled a next-generation aircraft carrier designed to integrate manned and unmanned systems under a unified command-and-control platform.
At the opening Monday of this year’s “biennial” Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2025 at KINTEX in Goyang, Jenna Ji, the company’s senior manager, said the vessel, called Ghost Commander II, aims to redefine maritime power projection by integrating crewed aircraft alongside a wide range of unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles.
“It’s still under development,” Ji told Global Business Press.
Measuring 240 meters (787 feet) in length and 60 meters (196 feet) in width, with a displacement of about 42,000 tons, the aircraft carrier mock-up was displayed at the country’s largest arms exhibition.
According to the company, its flight deck features an electromagnetic catapult, six helicopter pads, and two aircraft elevators, designed to efficiently launch and recover a wide range of aerial assets—ideal for responding to complex threats.
Unlike conventional carriers, Ghost Commander II uses AI to assist in rapid decision-making and features a multi-layered defense system that deploys countermeasures in stages against various threats, including ballistic missiles and drones.
