A 75-tonne liquid rocket engine is among the exhibits at Hanwha’s exhibition hall at the ongoing show, along with a range of products from the company’s space business. Hanwha is the biggest defence company in South Korea and is the major private player in the country’s efforts to boost its space capabilities. The 75-tonne liquid rocket engine is at the heart of Nuri, South Korea’s first domestically developed satellite launch vehicle. The three-stage liquid fuel rocket, also known as the Korean Satellite Launch Vehicle II, will be test launched this week, with additional launches planned in the coming years.
Apart from the liquid rocket engine, Hanwha Aerospace’s solid fuel space launch vehicle as well as Hanwha Systems’ low-orbit satellite communication service system are on display. Hanwha Aerospace has played a key role in the development of Nuri, having been involved in the construction of engines, turbopumps, and test facilities. Nuri is central to South Korea’s plans to launch surveillance satellites into orbit.
The surveillance satellites are essentially to monitor North Korea. The successful launch of the satellite launch vehicle will provide a fillip to South Korea’s plans to eventually build a Korean satellite-based navigation system and a 6G communications network.
