IAF Tejas Mk2 Breaks Cover

: Feb 21, 2019 - : 2:26 am

Indian development of the Tejas light fighter for the IAF continues and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is showcasing a model of the proposed IAF Tejas Mk2 ‘Medium Weight Fighter’. The new aircraft will have a max all up weight of 17.5 tonne and features a new configuration with a compound delta wing with close coupled canard wings. The new aircraft is being developed to replace the IAF’s MiG-29, Mirage 2000 and Jaguar fighter aircraft around mid 2030. A new higher thrust GE F414 INS-6 engine will power the IAF Tejas Mk2.

According to officials, the maiden flight of the Tejas Mk2 will take place in 2023, with the aircraft slated to complete all certification requirements by 2025. Initial design for the programme has been completed and the aircraft features a new fuselage and is likely to enter service with an indigenously developed AESA radar. The Tejas Mk2 will be cleared almost all new generation weapons in the IAF inventory.

In addition to the distinctive high mounted close coupled canard wings, the Tejas Mk2 will feature an Infra-Red Search and Track (IRST), Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS), upgraded digital flight control computer, on-board oxygen generating system, active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, smart cockpit with larger displays and will have 11 weapons carriage stations to carry a variety of air to air missiles and heavy stand-off precision guided munitions.
