Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has showcased the RobDozer, a remotely operated military bulldozer, during a demonstration in the United States on 26 March. The event was part of the company's broader effort to advance autonomous ground systems for military applications.
Zvi Yarom, IAI’s Vice President and General Manager of the Land Division, noted the growing demand for autonomous ground systems in military operations. "After years of scepticism, attitudes have shifted dramatically. Since the war that began on 7 October 2023, autonomous systems have played a crucial role in various Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) units, and the army is now seeking more," he said. He also highlighted international interest in Israeli autonomous systems, including from the United States and India.
"The demonstration of the RobDozer today proved that our systems can be operated remotely while achieving real-time control," Yarom added.
The RobDozer, developed by IAI’s ELTA division, is an Autonomous Combat Engineering System designed for battlefield engineering tasks such as clearing obstacles and creating access routes. The vehicle can be fitted with additional equipment to carry out various engineering operations, including constructing fortifications, digging defensive positions, and building embankments.
According to IAI, the system's autonomy enables it to function in environments too dangerous for human operators, allowing continuous operations in high-risk zones. The vehicle is heavily armoured, with a 15-ton protective shell designed to withstand small arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades, and explosive devices. Its operator cabin is reinforced with additional armour to safeguard against battlefield threats.
IAI stated that by automating hazardous engineering tasks, the RobDozer enhances personnel safety while improving the operational efficiency of military units. The system is intended to support broader defence infrastructure, including the deployment of missile interceptor platforms in complex environments.
