IAI Expects More Wings for F-35

: Sep 30, 2019 - : 9:39 am

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) hopes to get more contracts if the Israeli Air Force decides to purchase additional F-35.

IAI last week has delivered the 100th wing of the F-35 to Lockheed Martin. The cancelation of the F-35 sale to Turkey creates a potential for more collaboration with IAI and other Israeli companies.

The delivery was marked by a ceremony held at the company’s wing assembly line, with the presence of representatives from Lockheed Martin’ management, and the Israeli Ministry of Defense

The wings manufacturing center of IAI’s aviation division was established in November 2014. It is based on the extensive know-how and experience in making wings for the F-16 and T-38. The center is now expected to manufacture more than 800 F35 wings by 2034. On December 2018, IAI inaugurated an innovative line for production of F-35 wing skins, expanding the collaboration between the two companies.

The Turkish industry was supposed to manufacture many parts of the F-35. Eight Turkish companies were contracted to supply parts to the program.

Israel has signed a contract for 50 F-35 and now is considering the purchase of another 25.Ten Israeli companies are supplying assembles and electrical parts for the F-35 program. The major supplier is Israel aerospace industries (IAI).

The Israeli industries are trying to understand how much additional work they may get due to the cancellation of the Turkish F-35 program.

Israeli sources said, that some of the work that was supposed to be done in Turkey will go to other countries that have signed contracts to buy the F-35, but the vast experience of the Israeli Air Force (IAF) and the capabilities of the local defense industries, may work in their favor.

The IAF is expected to receive the F-35 test aircraft equipped with special systems next year. This aircraft will enable the IAF to test new systems that have been developed for the stealth fighter, and according to the sources these also will have export potential to “certain countries”
