Japan has offered to co-produce advanced engines for next-generation fighter aircraft and tanks in India.
The development emerged from a high-level meeting held in New Delhi during a bilateral meeting between Japan's Defence Minister Gen Nakatani and his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh.
Outlining the capability of Indian defence industry particularly its potential to collaborate with the Japanese side on new areas, Singh emphasized on harnessing Japan’s long expertise in military engine technology, particularly in the areas of aero-engines and tank propulsion systems.
Japan's IHI is the leading company of jet engines in Japan with a 60-70 per cent share of the market.
IHI is the primary contractor and manufacturer for the aircraft engines used by Japan's Ministry of Defence, and participates in international collaborative projects that develop and supply various market segments, from super large to small engines for civilian aircraft.
The company has developed engine technologies for future fighter aircraft as a ministry contractor, including for the XF9-1 engine, and through in-house research.
"We are leveraging world class component technology amassed in the XF9-1 engines delivered in June 2018 to pursue joint international development of engines for future fighter jets," a company official informed.
The XF9-1 is a prototype engine capable of 15 metric tons of thrust that IHI delivered to the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency of Japan’s Ministry of Defense.
The XF9 engine specifications aligns well with India’s requirement for its proposed Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
"Utilizing these engineering and manufacturing technologies, IHI has acquired high reputation with its engine maintenance centre in Asian markets. In the course of expanding strong demand for eco-friendly engines and its corporate responsibility, IHI is now carrying out R&D on various next generation engines based on the most advanced technologies," the official said.
IHI Corporation has been an engine contractor for the next-generation fighter aircraft, being jointly developed by Japan, the U.K and Italy.
Currently, the Aero Engine Maintenance division is also undertaking shop maintenance of commercial engines such as the CF34, V2500, GE90. And PW1100G-JM (GTF Engine) is planned in the near future, he added.
The T700 turboshaft engine powers the MoD's anti-submarine, rescue, and multi-purpose helicopters. It is turning the rotors by converting the jet blast to rotative power. IHI also has conducted mass production through a license with General Electric (GE) of U.S.A.
Also, the F7-10 high-bypass ratio engine powers the P-1 patrol aircraft.
It is a totally new engine that was developed by Japanese Defense Ministry.
And IHI has conducted mass production as the prime contractor.
