The 12th edition of IMDEX Asia was inaugurated in Singapore at the Changi Exhibition Centre by the Minister for Defence Dr. Ng Eng Hen. “The show has now gone beyond exhibitions to serve an important focal point for defence and military leaders to exchange views, and arrive at a consensus on common security challenges in this region and ways to tackle them through collaboration and co-operation,” he said.
Participation by high-level delegations and representatives from global maritime defence and naval forces, IMDEX Asia 2019 is hosting 23 defence and navy chiefs, as well as representatives from navies and Coast Guards from over 40 countries. This year’s exhibition will also see more than 400 delegates come together for conversations that are focused on ways to promote safe and secure seas and ensure mutual security for the world.
Singapore sits at the confluence of the two key arterial networks formed by the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea. As a result, 25 per cent of all the traded goods in the world on more than 1,000 ships pass through the Singapore Strait each day. They carry every kind of product and commodity that are essential for modern economies to live, function and thrive.
Despite global uncertainties, including trade disputes and security tensions, trade volumes through the seas have been going up and are expected to increase further. Experts estimate that global container throughput is projected to grow by four percent each year, exceeding 800 million TEUs, and generating earnings of over US$25 billion for container ports around the world.
“Literally and figuratively, we need calm seas in this region to ensure that global commerce continues and good relations between countries are maintained. But there are dark storm clouds on the horizon that can threaten the global maritime commons and our shared prosperity,” added Dr. Ng.
The strategic location of Singapore as a maritime gateway to the region also makes it an ideal venue for IMDEX Asia.
“IMDEX Asia is an important platform for naval and maritime stakeholders to network and strengthen ties, share and exchange knowledge, and keep abreast of the latest technological developments. It is an ecosystem that sets out to foster engagement, and accelerate global and regional collaboration for Asia Pacific’s peace and security,” said Vincent Chong, Chairman Experia Events, while speaking at the opening ceremony.
The two maritime business forums will be held on Day 2 of the biennial maritime defence show, where eight industry experts will take the lead and facilitate conversations on issues of cybersecurity and innovation in the maritime domain.
“We have an exciting line-up of start-ups coming from 51 countries at this inaugural showcase at IMDEX Asia 2019. One such company is Singapore-based Performance Rotors; which provides UAV inspection services in confined areas of tunnels and ships. From the Philippines, Antipara Exploration offers underwater 3D geospatial mapping and analytics that uses an underwater towed platform fitted with cameras and a sonar system,” highlighted Chong.
