The 14th International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference Asia (IMDEX Asia) has grown dramatically from its modest origins in 1997, when just five navies and 65 exhibitors took part in the defence exhibition. As the show nears three decades since its inception, the latest edition of the show that is now underway in Singapore features 230 exhibitors belonging to 26 countries with an expected trade foot fall of 12,500 visitors from over 70 countries. There are 56 VIP delegations across 35 nations, including Navy Chiefs, Coast Guard Director-Generals, and Heads of Maritime Law Enforcement Agencies. The highly sought-after warship display in Changi Naval Base features 17 warships from 13 countries, which includes, HMAS Arunta, HMS Spey, ITS Antonio Marceglia, JS Yahagi, KDB Darussalam, KRI Bung Karno and KRI Kerambi.
Speaking at the inaugral ceremony, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad said, “Through its evolution, IMDEX has become a crucial platform where defence and military leaders and the defence industry converge to exchange perspectives, establish new partnerships and address common security challenges that affect our region. It is heartening to see such strong international participation, especially amidst the backdrop of a more turbulent world.”
He also highlighted the challenges facing the maritime domain, which have taken on a new dimension and complexity. While traditional maritime security challenges such as piracy, illegal fishing, smuggling and disaster-response continue to remain relevant, more novel threats such as cyber-attacks on ships and on maritime infrastructure have increased in frequency. “We see an increasing number of drones being used in the maritime space, often operated by non-state actors, and this as we have seen, has disrupted global shipping,” he added. With the potential for disruption growing, the role of the navies goes beyond traditional threats and security domains, and even economic security and communications.
The Naval leadership of the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) member-nations, Chief of the Royal Australian Navy Vice Admiral (VADM) Mark Hammond, Chief of the Royal Malaysian Navy Admiral (ADM) Datuk Zulhelmy bin Ithnain, Chief of the Royal New Zealand Navy Rear Admiral (RADM) Garin Golding, Chief of the Republic of Singapore Navy RADM Sean Wat, as well as Director Develop and Controller of the Royal Navy RADM James Parkin jointly called on Zaqy on the sidelines of the exhibition.
The FPDA naval leadership reaffirmed their commitment to the FPDA, and emphasised its strategic importance and enduring relevance in an evolving security landscape. They also exchanged views with Zaqy on the importance of strengthening multilateral ties and contributing to regional peace and security.
