The Indian Air Force (IAF) has formally initiated a significant expansion of its airborne surveillance capabilities, issuing a Request for Information (RFI) for six medium-class Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platforms. This move is designed to bridge a widening capability gap in the Asia-Pacific region, where neighbouring air forces have significantly outpaced India in persistent aerial oversight. The projected investment for this phase of the surveillance overhaul is estimated at approximately ₹20,000 crore (US$2.4 billion).
The new platforms are envisioned as a comprehensive system of systems, integrating Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars, electronic surveillance measures, and advanced command-and-control (C2) suites. According to the RFI requirements, the aircraft must maintain a minimum endurance of 10 hours or possess mid-air refuelling capabilities. Furthermore, the systems must be capable of operating from high-altitude airfields situated at 10,000 feet, reflecting the unique geographical demands of India’s northern frontiers.
This procurement drive follows reports from The New Indian Express and The Tribune, which highlight the IAF’s dual-track strategy to reach a total fleet of 12 AEW&C units. Currently, the IAF operates a lean fleet comprising three Beriev A-50EI Mainstays and two indigenously developed Netra Mk-1 systems. In contrast, regional peers like China and Pakistan maintain larger, more modernised fleets, with Islamabad recently eyeing advanced Chinese Shaanxi KJ-500 platforms.
The strategic shift towards larger airframes, specifically the Airbus A321, marks a transition from the smaller Embraer-based Netra Mk-1 units. By utilizing the A321 platform, the IAF gains the necessary volume for more powerful Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based radars and a larger mission crew. This expansion is critical for maintaining maritime domain awareness across the Indian Ocean and providing a networked "flying command centre" that can detect everything from low-RCS drones to hypersonic threats.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will lead the mission system integration, aiming to maximise indigenous content in line with national "Make in India" objectives. While the Airbus A321s are being sourced from the existing Air India fleet to reduce lead times, the project represents a significant opportunity for the international aerospace supply chain, particularly in the realms of sensor fusion and secure data-link networking.
With a service ceiling of 45,000 feet and a requirement for 360-degree sensor coverage, these aircraft are intended to act as force multipliers for India’s fighter squadrons. The ability to track targets deep within hostile territory while coordinating complex air operations ensures that the IAF can maintain a high tempo of operations during contested scenarios along its western and northern borders.
