The Indian Ministry of Defence conducted a high-level progress review of the C295 maritime patrol variant project on 20 January 2026. This initiative focuses on the configuration of 15 specialised aircraft equipped with a suite of indigenous sensors designed to bolster multi-mission capabilities across the Indian Ocean Region. This development follows the broader US$2.5 billion contract signed in 2021 for 56 C295 transport aircraft, which established the first private-sector final assembly line for military aircraft in India.
The maritime project involves a strategic split of assets, with nine aircraft destined for the Indian Navy as Medium Range Maritime Reconnaissance (MRMR) platforms and six allocated to the Indian Coast Guard as Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft (MMMA). These variants are being tailored to bridge the operational gap between the short-range Dornier 228 fleet and the long-range Boeing P-8I Poseidon aircraft. By integrating home-grown technology, India aims to reduce its reliance on foreign mission systems while enhancing its strategic autonomy in a region increasingly defined by complex maritime security challenges.
According to reports from official sources and mainstream outlets including the Press Information Bureau and ANI, the technical core of the project is being spearheaded by the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS), a premier laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These sources confirm that the aircraft will feature an indigenous Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, advanced electro-optic/infra-red (EO/IR) payloads, and locally developed data links. This mission-specific hardware will allow for high-precision tracking of surface and sub-surface threats, providing the Indian armed forces with a comprehensive maritime domain awareness (MDA) capability.
The deployment of these 15 C295 variants is a critical component of India’s broader strategy to secure the primary sea lanes of communication in the Asia-Pacific. As regional flashpoints in the South China Sea and the wider Indo-Pacific continue to proliferate, the ability to maintain persistent surveillance over the Indian Ocean has become a top priority for New Delhi. The C295’s 11-hour flight endurance makes it an ideal platform for extended patrols, anti-piracy operations, and monitoring the increasing presence of foreign naval assets in nearby waters.
The industrial framework for the C295 project represents a landmark for the international aerospace sector. While the first 16 transport units were delivered in fly-away condition from Airbus’s facility in Seville, Spain, the maritime variants will benefit from the burgeoning aerospace ecosystem in India. The Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) facility in Vadodara is central to this transition, with the first domestically manufactured C295 expected to roll out by September 2026. This facility is scheduled to ramp up production significantly, aiming to deliver a total of 40 aircraft to the Indian Air Force by August 2031, alongside the additional maritime orders.
Unlike the standard transport version, the maritime patrol variant undergoes extensive structural and electronic modifications to accommodate specialized warfare and surveillance gear. The DRDO-led integration includes an Electronic Warfare (EW) suite manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited and Bharat Dynamics Limited. For the Indian Navy, the aircraft will be capable of carrying sonobuoys and potentially anti-ship missiles or torpedoes, transforming the tactical turboprop into a potent anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare asset. The Indian Coast Guard’s configuration will focus on search and rescue (SAR), pollution monitoring, and fisheries protection.
The project is estimated to generate over 600 highly skilled direct jobs and thousands of indirect roles, further cementing the partnership between European aerospace expertise and Indian manufacturing prowess. As the Ministry of Defence pushes for higher indigenous content—targeting over 75 per cent for future units—the C295 programme stands as a primary benchmark for international defence trade and technology transfer in the 21st century.
