The Indian Army has formally selected the BAE Systems Hägglunds BvS10 articulated all-terrain vehicle for its next-generation tracked platform, awarding Larsen & Toubro (L&T) a licensed manufacturing contract to build 18 of the bespoke “Sindhu” variant at L&T’s Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira. The announcement comes amid New Delhi’s concerted effort to modernise its land forces while deepening domestic defence production under the “Make in India” campaign.
According to the original report, this marks the first major foray of the BvS10 family into Asia. The deal was confirmed on November 19 by both L&T and BAE Systems in public filings.
L&T’s Hazira facility will not only produce the vehicles, but also provide a full integrated logistics support (ILS) package to ensure sustainable deployment, maintenance, and life-cycle support. BAE Systems Hägglunds, the original platform designer, will supply technical and design assistance under the licensing agreement.
The “Sindhu” variant has been specifically adapted to meet India’s demanding geographic and climatic conditions. The Indian version of the BvS10 is optimised for operations across high-altitude Himalayan regions, desert expanses, marshlands, and amphibious terrain. Such environments include extreme cold, thin air, shifting sands, and swampy wetlands — all of which challenge conventional wheeled or single-body tracked vehicles.
Trials of the BvS10 Sindhu reportedly proved successful at altitudes as high as 18,000 feet above mean sea level, according to BAE Systems. This performance underscores why the Indian Army prioritised the vehicle’s “unmatched mobility, flexibility and resilience under severe climatic conditions,” in the words of BAE Hägglunds’ leadership.
Beyond enhancing tactical mobility, the deal carries broader industrial and strategic significance. By localising more than 60 percent of the vehicle’s content, L&T and BAE Systems aim to bolster “security of supply” for the BvS10 ecosystem. This move aligns with India’s broader objective of reducing dependency on foreign imports, while tapping into global‐class defence technology through meaningful technology transfer.
BAE’s Regional Director, Darren Restarick, emphasised that the collaboration “lays the foundation for future growth” in Asia, noting that this is the first major expansion of the BvS10 platform into the Indo-Pacific.
The BvS10 platform has a well-established pedigree, already in service in numerous European militaries — including those of Sweden, the Netherlands, the UK, France, Austria, and Ukraine — and under order in Germany. This Indian deal places it firmly in the Asia-Pacific defence arena, adding to the region’s growing demand for agile, all-terrain logistics and combat platforms.
The modular architecture of the vehicle allows it to be configured for multiple roles: troop carrier, command post, medical evacuation, recovery, logistics, or even as a weapons-mounted system. For a region characterised by vast distances, difficult terrain, and variable infrastructure, such flexibility is increasingly vital.
For India, the BvS10 Sindhu programme is more than a capability upgrade; it is a statement of industrial ambition. The partnership with BAE Systems underlines L&T’s rising maturity in systems engineering for critical defence platforms. The licensing arrangement also supports India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) vision by combining global technology with local manufacturing.
By bringing such a niche but high-value vehicle into domestic production, India not only enhances its strategic mobility but also positions itself as a potential exporter of advanced articulated all-terrain vehicles in the future — especially in the rapidly evolving Indo-Pacific defence market.
