The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to initiate its 2026 flight manifest with the high-stakes launch of the PSLV-C62 mission, scheduled for 12 January. Blasting off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, the mission serves as a critical recovery point for the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) programme following a rare third-stage technical anomaly in mid-2025. This flight is not merely a return to operational tempo but a sophisticated display of India’s maturing dual-use capabilities, integrating high-end military surveillance with pioneering commercial technology demonstrations that carry significant weight for the Asia-Pacific security architecture.
At the heart of the PSLV-C62 mission is the EOS-N1, also designated as Anvesha, a hyperspectral imaging satellite developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This primary payload represents a generational shift in India’s orbital reconnaissance, offering the ability to detect camouflaged assets and military installations that remain invisible to traditional optical sensors. By analysing hundreds of light shades across the electromagnetic spectrum, Anvesha provides the Indian Ministry of Defence with an unprecedented advantage in monitoring sensitive border regions. Within the broader Asia-Pacific context, this indigenous capability reduces reliance on external intelligence providers and positions India as a primary provider of regional maritime and terrestrial domain awareness.
According to reports from India Today, The Hindu, and The Economic Times, the mission’s secondary payloads underscore a pivot toward sustainable space operations and edge computing. A standout among the eighteen co-passengers is AayulSAT, developed by the Bengaluru-based startup OrbitAID Aerospace. This mission serves as India’s first demonstrator for on-orbit refuelling technology, a capability currently dominated by a handful of global powers. By testing docking and fuel transfer interfaces, India is laying the groundwork for satellite life extension and reusable orbital infrastructure. Simultaneously, the MOI-1 satellite, a collaborative effort between Hyderabad-based TakeMe2Space and Eon Space Labs, will validate in-orbit artificial intelligence. The payload, costing approximately ₹2.5 crore (US$300,000), enables real-time image processing in space, drastically reducing data downlink requirements and operational costs.
The PSLV-C62 mission also functions as a vehicle for India’s growing "space diplomacy" within the Asia-Pacific and beyond. The flight includes the Indo-Mauritius Joint Satellite (IMJS) and a dedicated payload for Nepal, reinforcing New Delhi’s role as a cost-effective and reliable launch partner for emerging economies. This commercial outreach is managed by NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL), which has successfully integrated payloads from Brazil, Spain, and the United Kingdom into this single mission. The inclusion of the Kestrel Initial Technology Demonstrator (KID) from a Spanish startup further illustrates the PSLV’s status as a global "space bus." For regional neighbours, the availability of the PSLV-DL variant—equipped with two strap-on boosters—offers a strategic alternative to Western or Chinese launch services, fostering a multipolar space ecosystem in Asia.
The industrial backdrop of this launch is equally significant. As ISRO moves toward privatising its workhorse fleet, 2026 is expected to see the first PSLV produced entirely by a consortium comprising Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T). This transition from a state-led model to an industry-driven one is designed to scale launch frequencies and capture a larger share of the global small-satellite market. With the uncrewed Gaganyaan G-1 mission slated for later this quarter and private players like Skyroot Aerospace preparing indigenous rockets, India’s space industry is transitioning from a developmental phase into a robust commercial and defence powerhouse. For the international aerospace community, PSLV-C62 is the litmus test for this new era of Indian self-reliance and regional leadership.
