Indo Defence Highlights Regional Growth at DSA 2026
The Southeast Asian defence landscape is witnessing a profound transformation as regional powers ramp up investment in sovereign capabilities and strategic partnerships.
Against the backdrop of the Defence Services Asia Exhibition and Conference in Kuala Lumpur, the organisers of Indo Defence 2027 Expo & Forum have launched a significant international outreach campaign to signal the next phase of Indonesia’s military industrial evolution. This strategic presence in Malaysia underscores a burgeoning trend of intra-ASEAN collaboration, where nations are increasingly looking toward their neighbours to build resilient supply chains and shared security frameworks.
This push for deeper regional integration comes at a pivotal moment for the Asia-Pacific, as nations navigate a complex geopolitical environment defined by a desire for strategic autonomy. By participating actively in the Malaysian circuit, the Indonesian delegation is not merely marketing a trade show but is instead positioning Jakarta as a central hub for the tri-service defence, aerospace, and maritime sectors. This proactive engagement reflects a broader regional shift toward higher-value investments and advanced technological capabilities, moving away from simple procurement toward long-term industrial cooperation and joint development.
According to official communications released by the Indo Defence secretariat and reporting from Reuters, the upcoming 2027 edition of the expo aims to scale its international footprint significantly. These sources highlight that the outreach at DSA 2026 is designed to consolidate interest from global industry leaders and government officials ahead of the eleventh edition of the Indonesian event. The strategy focuses on highlighting the rapid expansion of the Southeast Asian defence market, which has seen procurement and research spending across key nations like Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia rise by billions of dollars in recent years.
The Indo Defence team is currently stationed at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre within the dedicated Indonesia Pavilion from 20 to 23 April 2026. Their presence at Level 2, Hall 6, includes a high-level delegation representing eleven major Indonesian entities, ranging from aerospace giants like PT Dirgantara Indonesia to naval specialists such as PT PAL Indonesia. This collective front serves to demonstrate the maturity of the Indonesian defence ecosystem to prospective international partners and delegates attending the biennial Malaysian exhibition.
Central to the discussions in Kuala Lumpur are the two new specialised zones planned for the 2027 Jakarta event: the Innovation Zone and the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul Zone. The Innovation Zone, developed alongside the Defence Technology Agency, focuses on the commercialisation of national research and the support of emerging technology enterprises. Meanwhile, the MRO Zone aims to position Indonesia as a regional leader in technical maintenance, facilitating engagement with global technical collaborators to strengthen the domestic sustainment of military hardware across the tri-service spectrum.
The scale of the forthcoming Indo Defence 2027 Expo & Forum is projected to exceed previous records, with organisers targeting 1,000 exhibitors from 60 different countries. This expansion includes the planned hosting of 35 international country pavilions, reflecting the event's growing significance as a global platform for the defence industry. By engaging with the international community at DSA 2026, the organisers are capitalising on the momentum of the previous tenth edition, which successfully united over 1,100 participants and attracted more than 45,000 visitors to Jakarta.
Scheduled to take place from 12 to 15 May 2027, the expo will move to the Nusantara International Convention Exhibition in Tangerang. This transition to a newer, larger venue signifies the physical growth required to accommodate the increasing demand for exhibition space from global aerospace and maritime firms. As Southeast Asian nations continue to increase their research and development budgets, such platforms remain essential for the technology transfer and local production initiatives that are now central to regional defence policies.
