Indonesia Demonstrates Mobile Passive Radar Prototype

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Nov 21, 2020 - : 7:46 pm

The research and development department of the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (Balitbang Kemhan) and PT. LAPI ITB have successfully demonstrated the first prototype of a mobile passive radar system.

The demonstration took place on Nov. 12 at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base (AFB), Jakarta. The prototype, which was unveiled at the 2018 Indo Defence Expo, was built in Husein Sastranegara AFB and underwent several testing phases before its demonstration.

The locally designed and built passive radar is mounted on top of a specially designed truck for quick and easy transportation. The radar, therefore, does not need a specific and permanent ground installation.

The next testing phase of the radar will also involve the Indonesian National Air Defence Command (Kohanudnas) of the Indonesian Air Force, which will be its operator. After the next testing phase and evaluation of the prototype, the production phase is projected to start within two years.

Further details of its specification and capabilities are currently still unknown.
