Indonesia In “Advanced Stage” Talks To Purchase 36 Rafale Jets

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Dec 11, 2020 - : 1:59 pm

Indonesia is in “advanced stage” of discussions with France for the purchase 36 Rafale fighter jets, Florence Parly,  France’s Minister of Defense, has said.

The Minister’s comments came during a recent interview  with BFM Business news channel. It may be recalled that Prabowo Subianto, during a visit to Paris in October, had indicated  that Indonesia is interested in purchasing 48 units of the French-made fighter jets.  Indonesia is reportedly interested in purchasing several Scorpene-class submarines and Gowind-class corvettes as well.

It is a possibility that Indonesia’s interest in Rafale is related to the South Korea-Indonesia K-FX/I-FX fighter jet program that will be fitted with MBDA Meteor beyond visual range air to air missile. While there were question marks in the past over Indonesia’s continuation in the project, all such doubts have now been laid to rest as indicated by a display model of the K-FX/I-FX during the South Korean defense expo in September.  which was further confirmed by a source close to the Indonesian Ministry of Defence sources have also confirmed that Indonesia remains an integral part of the program.

Subianto had in October visited the U.S., Turkey, France and Austria  to speak with defence officials and contractors as part of Indonesia’s attempts to find a suitable replacement for its aging fighter jets. The country has been using the F-5 for nearly four decades, with minimal upgrades. The U.S. reportedly would like Indonesia to replace the F-5s with fourth generation  F-16s retrofitted with new technologies, but it is unlikely that Jakarta would go that route.
