Indonesia Launches New 2,500 DWT Landing Craft Utility to Bolster Army’s Maritime Logistics

Indonesia has recently launched a new Landing Craft Utility (LCU) vessel with a displacement of 2,500 DWT, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening national defence logistics and maritime security. The vessel, launched in April this year at Tanjung Balai Karimun in the Riau Islands, is the first of two such ships that will be operated by the Indonesian Army (TNI-AD) rather than the Indonesian Navy.

This modern LCU is intended to support the Army’s logistics posture and force projection in Indonesia’s archipelagic environment. Measuring 100 metres in length, 18 metres in width, and 8.85 metres in height, the vessel has a draft of 3.8 metres and can reach speeds of up to 14 knots. It has a range of 4,550 nautical miles and can accommodate 63 crew members along with up to 450 personnel—equivalent to one battalion.

The vessel is designed for multiple roles, including the transportation of military logistics, humanitarian missions, disaster response, and regional stability support. The new 2,500-tonne LCUs will augment the Indonesian Army’s current fleet of six older LCUs, which are in the 1,000 to 1,500 tonnes class, thereby significantly enhancing the Army’s maritime logistics capability.

The Ministry of Defence has highlighted that the construction of these vessels aligns with national efforts to modernise the Indonesian military while also strengthening the domestic defence industry. Built by PT Multi Ocean Shipyard, the project is a key milestone for Indonesia’s shipbuilding sector, reflecting the country’s push for greater self-reliance and competitiveness in defence production. The Ministry has called for continued innovation and capacity-building in national shipyards to ensure Indonesia remains resilient and competitive in the international maritime and defence markets
