During a bilateral meeting in Malacañan Palace on Wednesday (Jan. 10), Indonesian President Joko Widodo sought support from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. for the Philippines to purchase anti-submarine aircraft from Indonesia.

“I also seek Your Excellency’s support related to the purchase of anti-submarine warfare aircraft for the Philippine Navy from Indonesia,” said Widodo without mentioning any specific platform.

Jokowi, as the Indonesian President popularly known in Indonesia, is in the Philippines for his state visit. He departed Indonesia on Tuesday (Jan. 9) to visit the Philippines, Vietnam, and Brunei Darussalam and is scheduled to return to Indonesia on Sunday (Jan. 14).

In his meeting with President Marcos, both leaders agreed to improve defense relations, border joint patrols as well as cooperation between the two nations on the acquisition of military hardware.

While no specific aircraft was mentioned by the Indonesian President, the country’s state-owned aircraft manufacturer, PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) has produced and delivered its fixed-wing CN-235 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) to both the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL), and Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU).

PTDI was also involved in Turkiye’s Meltem II program to provide CN-235 Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) aircraft. Six CN-235 ASW are currently operational with the Turkish Navy.
