Small debris and personal crew artifacts believed to be from  KRI Nanggala (402) were recovered from the sea on Saturday as Indonesia officially declared that the missing submarine has sunk.

“This morning was the deadline for […] the 72-hour oxygen availability inside KRI Nanggala,” said Indonesian Military Chief, Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, in a press conference at Bali on Saturday evening. “Elements of the Indonesian Navy have found […] debris that offers  authentic evidence for the sinking phase of KRI Nanggala.”

“These are believed to be parts or components that are inherent in the submarine.” said Indonesian Navy Chief, Admiral Yudo Margono, referring to a few pieces of debris and crew’s praying mat that were recovered from the sea and displayed during the conference. “With [these] authentic evidence [from] Nanggala, we have now moved from the ‘sub miss’ phase to ‘sub sunk.”

Efforts are now focused to find the exact location of the sunken submarine on the seafloor some 800 meters beneath the surface.

Indonesian Navy KRI Nanggala (402) was a Type-209/1300 submarine that was made in Germany in 1977-1978 and commissioned in 1981. Together with its sister ship KRI Cakra (401), they have been refitted and upgraded several times, last of which was in South Korea in 2012.
