The Indonesian government has started opening international flights to Bali with the arrival of a Garuda Indonesia flight at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport from Narita, Japan on Friday (Feb. 4).

The decision to reopen flights to one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia is intended to boost its economy which is one of the worst affected among Indonesia’s provinces due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“I appreciate the national airline Garuda Indonesia, which from today officially starts serving Narita – Denpasar flights operated with the A330-300 fleet. Hopefully, with the opening of international entrances in Bali, we can revive our economy,” said Sandiaga Uno, Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy.

“The opening of international flights to Bali is carried out as one of the government’s efforts to make various international-scale events to be held in Bali and several other cities in Indonesia, such as the G20 Summit, MotoGP, and the 2023 ASEAN Summit,” he added.

Strict health protocols have been set in place for international arrival to Bali. All travelers will have to undergo quarantine at their own expense. Fully vaccinated travelers will have to be quarantined for five days after their arrival, while those who have only received their first dosage will have to undergo seven days of quarantine.

Aside from a RT-PCR test directly after arrival, there will be a second RT-PCR test on the fourth day of quarantine for those who have been fully vaccinated. Travelers who have been vaccinated only once will have a third RT-PCR test on the sixth day of quarantine.

During the initial phase of reopening international flights, the Indonesian government has appointed five hotels as quarantine facilities with a total capacity of 447 rooms at Nusa Dua, Ubud, Sanur, and Jimbaran.
