Indonesia may be reviving its long-delayed acquisition of Sukhoi Su-35 multirole fighter jets, according to sources within the government. While no official confirmation has been made, a formal statement is expected in the coming weeks. The deal had been on hold for several years due to geopolitical pressures and funding issues.
In parallel, there are indications that Jakarta is revisiting the possibility of acquiring a batch of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets formerly operated by the Qatari Air Force. Discussions have also reportedly emerged regarding a potential procurement of China's J-10 fighter jets, though these remain preliminary.
Meanwhile, US defence contractor Boeing continues its efforts to finalise a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the production and delivery of F-15EX Eagle II jets. Signed in 2023, the agreement has seen little movement, reportedly due to financial constraints under the previous administration.
This string of potential acquisitions has raised concerns among Indonesian defence analysts. If pursued simultaneously, the deals could further complicate the Indonesian Air Force’s already diverse fleet, which includes combat aircraft from the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, Brazil, and South Korea.
The impending delivery of French-built Dassault Rafale jets and a planned future induction of the South Korean KF-21 fighter are expected to add to the logistical and operational challenges. Although the Air Force has outlined plans to retire older platforms, analysts believe this will only partially ease the burden.
Looking ahead, Indonesia has expressed interest in joining the development and production of Türkiye’s fifth-generation KAAN fighter jet. While such participation remains long-term, it reflects the country’s ambition to bolster domestic aerospace capabilities.
Indonesia’s "free and active" foreign policy guides its defence posture, especially in light of growing US-China rivalry in the region. The diverse origin of its defence equipment reflects an effort to avoid overreliance on any single supplier. However, this balancing act brings with it significant challenges in platform integration and interoperability—requiring extensive effort to unify disparate systems under a cohesive command and control framework.
