President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, has conveyed Indonesia’s interest in participating in the joint development of Türkiye’s fifth-generation fighter jet programme, Kaan, which is currently being developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI).
The proposal was made by President Prabowo during a joint statement with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan following a one-on-one meeting and a bilateral discussion between the two governments.
“Indonesia wishes to be involved in the development of the fifth-generation Kaan fighter jet, as well as in the joint development and construction of submarines with Turkish industry,” President Prabowo said during the joint statement at the Presidential Palace in Ankara on Thursday (Apr. 10), as quoted from Antara.
President Prabowo also announced that Indonesia and Türkiye had agreed to establish a joint venture between defence companies from both nations. However, he did not specify which companies are being considered for the joint venture.
The Kaan is a fifth-generation fighter jet under development by Turkish Aerospace Industries since 2010. The first prototype of the indigenous aircraft successfully completed its maiden and second test flights in 2024. The first production batch is scheduled for completion between 2028 and 2029 for the Turkish Air Force.
In March 2025, Türkiye reportedly offered Indonesia the opportunity to join the Kaan programme.
In the joint statement, President Prabowo also emphasised that both leaders agreed to expand market access and remove trade barriers between the two countries. President Prabowo and President Erdoğan instructed their respective ministers to expedite negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), which would serve as a stepping stone toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Indonesia and Turkiye.
The meeting and subsequent bilateral discussions were followed by a press briefing at the Turkish Presidential Palace in Ankara, attended by members of the Turkish and Indonesian press corps.
President Prabowo’s visit to Ankara is a reciprocal state visit, following President Erdoğan’s visit to the Presidential Palace in Bogor, West Java, on 12 February 2025.
