Leonardo has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and PT ESystem Solutions Indonesia at the Singapore Airshow 2026. The agreement focuses on the supply and support of the M-346 F "Block 20" aircraft to meet the operational requirements of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU). This selection follows a formal evaluation by the MoD to identify a platform capable of fulfilling both advanced training and light combat roles.
The procurement programme is a central component of Indonesia’s fleet modernisation strategy, aimed at replacing ageing assets such as the BAE Systems Hawk. Beyond the acquisition of the airframes, the LOI outlines a framework for industrial cooperation, including the localisation of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, alongside pilot training and human capital development within the domestic aerospace sector. The involved parties are now expected to progress toward a formal procurement contract.
The M-346 F "Block 20" represents a significant technological upgrade over previous iterations. The cockpit is integrated with a Large Area Display (LAD) and a Link 16 data-link to improve situational awareness and interoperability. Mission capabilities are further enhanced by an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, electronic countermeasures, and new precision weapon systems. The platform also features aerial refuelling capabilities, extending its operational range for both air-to-air and air-to-surface missions.
Functioning as a dual-role platform, the M-346 utilises a Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) training logic. This system integrates the physical aircraft with a Ground Based Training System (GBTS), allowing pilots to engage in complex simulated scenarios while in flight. To date, nearly 160 M-346 aircraft have been sold globally, accumulating over 150,000 flight hours. The type is currently utilised by 20 countries for lead-in fighter training or light combat operations and was recently selected by the Italian Air Force for its national aerobatic team, the "Frecce Tricolori".
