Indonesia To Acquire 51 Jet Fighters In 2024

Indonesia is planning to buy 36 French-made Rafale and 15 U.S. made F-15EX jet fighters in the next three years.

Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) Chief of Staff, Air Chief Marshal Fadjar Prasetyo, said in Jakarta on Thursday that TNI-AU is also planning to buy 15 C-130J Hercules military transport, two units of Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aerial refueling aircraft, 30 new Ground Control Intercept (GCI) radars and three new Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) combat drones.

The US$ 21 million total budget for the plan – which also includes a modernization program for the current fleet of TNI-AU fighters – is currently being reviewed by the Indonesian Defense Ministry. Approval is expected soon.

The statement confirms earlier reports after the visit of Dassault Aviation executives to the Indonesian Defense Ministry last week, as well as the news regarding an offer from the United States of its advanced jet fighters for Indonesia in December last year.

The Indonesian Air Force currently operates a mixture of Russian and Western made fighters. While there was a plan to purchase a squadron of Russian Su-35 jets to replace its retired F-5E/F Tiger II fighters, it appears that plan has been abandoned due to the CAATSA sanction from the United States.

Indonesian Armed Forces are currently planning to upgrade their capabilities by purchasing new weapon systems. Aside from the confirmed statement from the Air Force, it is expected that the Indonesian Army and Navy will soon follow suit.
