PT Len Industri, an Indonesian state-owned enterprise, is preparing to build a radar manufacturing facility before the end of the year. The first product of the facility will be a Ground Controlled interception (GCI) radar with a detection range of about 450 km.
“[PT] Len Industri plans to start integrating all national radar industry ecosystems this year,” Company President Director Bobby Rasyidin told last week. “The success of the radar industry requires cooperation and collaboration between strategic partners and domestic R&D activities.”
The company plans to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign sources and to fulfill domestic and regional market needs. The establishment of a national radar manufacturing facility in Indonesia will also open up more job opportunities as well as to further develop Indonesia’s own technological competence in radar technologies.
“[Our] mastery of radar technology can be achieved with Indonesia’s current capabilities. Indonesia already has a Consortium for Research and Development (R&D) on GCI Radar [within the] R&D agency of the Ministry of Defense (Balitbang Kemhan) involving PT Len Industri, PT LAPI ITB, and [PT] Infoglobal.” Rasyidin added.
PT Len Industri is an Indonesian state-owned company in electronics R&D and manufacturing. Established in 1965, the company has so far handled various research and development activities, repairs, and integration of defense radar systems belonging to the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) to the weather radar of the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).
PT LAPI ITB and Balitbang Kemhan successfully demonstrated a mobile passive radar system last year. The system is now being evaluated by the Indonesian National Air Defence Command (Kohanudnas) of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU).
