Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced in Jakarta on Friday (Dec. 5) that the government plans to procure 200 helicopters starting in January 2026 to strengthen national air mobility and disaster response capabilities. The additional helicopters are intended to complement the existing fleet of C-130J Hercules and Airbus A400M transport aircraft.
During a visit to Banda Aceh on Saturday (Dec. 7), Prabowo further indicated that one of the helicopter types being envisioned for procurement is the Mi-26 - the largest helicopter to have entered serial production - or other large-capacity heavy-lift rotorcraft with similar capabilities.
According to the President, the helicopters will be deployed for a range of purposes, including disaster evacuation and logistics distribution. As an example, the government was reported to have deployed 50 helicopters during the recent flash floods and landslides in Sumatra to support humanitarian and relief operations.
It was further noted that such a large-scale deployment would have been difficult to envisage only a few years ago. The current operation was presented as an indication of the state’s operational readiness and presence in assisting communities affected by natural disasters.
The flash floods caused widespread devastation across three provinces in Sumatra - Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra - and began in late November 2025 following several days of continuous heavy rainfall and the formation of Tropical Cyclone Senyar.
Although the disaster began in late November, the scale of the emergency, including rising casualty figures, has continued to dominate developments throughout December 2025. The official emergency response period for the affected provinces started at the end of November and has extended into December, with search and rescue operations still ongoing as of 8 December 2025.
