: Nov 6, 2018 - : 4:36 pm

The 8th edition of Indo Defence 2018, now underway is a showcase of growing Indonesian defence capability, which has seen firms in the country being involved in the development of new battle tanks, fighter aircraft and production of warships and submarines. Indonesia’s need to guard and protect her maritime boundaries, necessitate the acquisition of modern military assets and it is this market opportunity that has seen foreign defence Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) make a beeline for the show.

An important landmark will be achieved later today, when Indonesia’s President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will formally preside over the naming ceremony for the new Indonesian medium battle tank that has been jointly developed by Turkey’s FNSS and Indonesian state-owned firm PT Pindad.

The new medium tank will deliver a modern combat machine to the Indonesian military that will deliver superior fire power, excellent crew protection and outstanding situational awareness because of the incorporation of a host of modern systems.

PT Pindad is promoting the new medium tank in several Southeast Asian countries and company officials say that have been receiving a positive response for the new offering, which is to be available for export from 2023.

PT Pindad (Persero) announced in August, that it had carried out firing tests of the new medium tank at the Indonesian Army’s Infantry Education Center.

The firing test was conducted to test the tank’s 105 mm gun and firing tests were carried out when the tank was static and while moving. The firing test was conducted using TPCSDS-T type munitions, HEP-T munition, TPCSDS munition and with HE4 TP2 munition. The tank carries 12 rounds inside the turret in the autoloader and 26 rounds are stored in the hull. As per PT PINDAD, the medium tank completed mine blast tests, mobility and performance tests earlier in August.

The new medium tank weighs 32 tons and has a power to weight ratio of 20 HP / ton. It can attain a maximum speed of 70 km / hour and accommodate a crew of three (commanders, gunner and driver).
