Indonesian Navy Commissions Locally Built Submarine

The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) officially commissioned its third Nagapasa class attack submarine, KRI Alugoro (405), at Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday.

KRI Alugoro is the first submarine to be locally built and assembled at Indonesian PT PAL’s facility, as well as the last of the first batch of three submarines – two of which were built in South Korea and have already entered active duty in 2017 and 2018.

Launched in April 2019, it was planned that KRI Alugoro would enter active duty following sea trials in December last year. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the commissioning had to be postponed. The ship joins its two sister submarines, the KRI Nagapasa (403) and KRI Ardadedali (404), as well as two older Cakra-class submarines, KRI Cakra (401) and KRI Nanggala (402), which have been in service since 1981.

The Nagapasa class submarine is an improved version of the Jang Bogo class built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) of South Korea. The Jang Bogo class itself is an improved version of German-made Type 209 diesel-electric submarine class that has been built since 1971 and exported to 14 countries.

Armed with 14 torpedoes, the 61.3 meters long and 1400 ton displacement Nagapasa class KRI Alugoro (405) submarine has a maximum speed of 21 knots when surfaced (11 knots submerged). The ship also has a maximum range of 20,000 km with enough provision for 50 days endurance at sea.

The contract for the second batch of three more submarines has already been signed between Indonesia and South Korea in 2019 which, when completed, will equip TNI-AL submarine force with a total of 8 submarines from at least 12 that was planned in Indonesia MEF (Minimum Essential Force) defence procurement programs.

The Indonesian Defence Ministry is currently in the process of acquiring between four to six more attack submarines from candidates such as France’s Scorpene class and Germany’s Type 214, along with variants of said submarine classes from Brazil and Turkey.
